We were lead around Rau by Mama Change. In Swahili refer to your elders as baba (father) and mama (mother) followed by their name. You usually refer to your age mates as kaka and dada (brother & siter) too.
She let us taste a local speciality called “mbege”. It is a beer made of fermented cooked bananas with an added grainy texture from mais. It wasn’t very tasty to the mzungu’s. . .
On the other hand the banana wine that we were allowed to sample was unlike any grape variety wine and still as delicious.
Mark, another volunteer, asked to photograph farmers planting corn. In return for the photos they asked that he plant some seeds with them.
